Gretna operates under a council / mayor form of government, with a separately elected mayor and four council persons. Council members are elected on a nonpartisan basis from two wards; all governing body members are elected to staggered four-year terms.
The mayor, with confirmation from the City Council, appoints the city administrator to manage day-to-day operations of the city. The governing body is responsible for developing policies and directions for the professional city administration.
